Did you know St. Michael’s has a First Aid Mental Health Trainer-in-Residence? St. Michael’s has a partnership with David Galvan, granting space to do the holy work of providing help, hope, and healing to those within and beyond our community.

About David Galvan: David has been teaching, training and facilitating conversations with students and adults about whole-person health since 2010. During that time, David has spoken to close to 30,000 students along the Front Range of Colorado and across the country. His vast amount of experience with students informed him as he co-produced two evidence-informed presentations that focus on healthy relationships and the issue of teen mental health awareness and suicide prevention. In 2023, David was awarded the Mental Health Instructor of the Year by Colorado’s Council for Behavior Health.

He is an engaging and dynamic speaker who has spoken to a variety of communities through countless workshops and seminars. David is a certified trainer in Adverse Childhood Experiences which focuses on trauma informed care. He is also a trainer of QPR (Question. Persuade. Refer), Youth & Teen Mental Health First Aid where he has trained over 1,500 individuals. David is also a Trainer with Soul Shop, a faith based initiative that equips faith leaders to minister to those that have been impacted by suicide. David is dedicated to the mission that every person should have access to help, healing and hope.

Training Information & Details

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

  • Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a gatekeeper course focused on reducing suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. Key components covered in the training include how to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide, common causes of suicidal behavior, warning signs of suicide, and how to help someone in crisis.

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) training includes how to understand the body’s reactions to trauma, how to recognize signs and symptoms of adverse childhood experiences, and how to guide people to wellness. You will not become a licensed counselor at the end of this training, but you will be equipped with the tools and best practices to become a trauma-informed care community member.

  • Teen Mental Health First Aid [tMHFA] is designed for 10th - 12th graders or ages 15-18. Teens will learn the skills they need to have supportive conversations with their friends and how to get help from a responsible and trusted adult.

  • Soul Shop (SS) is an interactive workshop that equips faith community leaders and people of faith to train their congregations to minister to those impacted by suicidal desperation. At a Soul Shop workshop, attendees will learn how to: prevent suicide in their community, identify suicide risk factors and warning signs, ask a person at risk if they might be thinking about suicide, be a companion to those experiencing suicide loss, know what the Bible has to say about suicide, and integrate suicide prevention into the life and ministry of the church.

Cost of trainings depend on location, number of participants, length of training, material fees, and lunches. Grants may be available.
